‘Troilo’

The Greats of Tango Series

Anibal Carmelo Troilo was an exceptional bandoneon instrumentalist. He was also a composer, arranger, and bandleader that spans the breath of tango genres. His orquesta típica was among the most popular with social dancers during the golden age of tango, but he changed to a concert sound by the late 1950s

Aníbal Troilo was born on July 11, 1914 and was nicknamed “Pichuco”, meaning “crybaby” by his father.  At the young age of 11 he was already performing in bars and by 14 had formed his first quintet.

Troilo’s style was diverse by tango standards and is one of the few that are known for being at the forefront of many styles.  Troilo’s orchesta is best known for its instrumentals, though he also recorded with many well-known vocalists and popular as a rhythmic/milonga orchesta. Troilo composed a wide range of tango’s ranging from the high energy ‘beat’ driven to the melancholic and melodic masterpieces such as Responso ( written suffering massive depression after the death of his best friend)

Artwork Details:

Troilo is a character and is often seen in photos with his head held at an angle, deeply engrossed in the music coming from the bandoneon in his hands.

It is this shape and poise that is captured in the artwork Troilo.  As a prolific artist, performer and recorder he was named ” Supreme Bandoneon of Buenos Aires” continuing to perform both live and studio until the year of his death (May 18, 1975)
