May 16 – 18, 2014
In May of 2014 while living in Berlin, Doni was approached by event organisers to produce a poster for the promotion of ‘Tango Industrial”, a tango festival/marathon to be held in Chemnitz. Chemnitz, a town in Germany, was a hub of the industrial revolution. During the mid 1800’s the numerous smokestacks of the town’s factories and foundries, the smoke and filth they produced was all par for the course.
The design brief was very short and to the point. The artwork was to capture this industrial past and root the event in “TANGO INDUSTRIAL” while paying homage to the Bandoneon.
‘Tango Industrial’ heralds a new moment in Doni tango art. It is one of the first artworks Doni was commissioned to do outside of Australia.
In the artwork Doni captures the essence of industrial with billowing smoke stacks and saw tooth factory roofs. A mechanical cog, which, when combined with the chimmy’s and factories can be seen to form the iron wheel of a turn of the century tractor. The bellows of the Bandoneon, an instrument central to Tango music curves across the sky and over the factories covering all with its sound of tango.
The artwork is based on a early 19 century propaganda styling with a bold, monochrome palette of steel grey with a strong red to herald the name of the event. The sky has rays of sunlight breaking through scattered clouds and brings a feeling of light to an otherwise heavily industrial scene.
At the bottom of the details of the event can be see including the headline act, live performances by Solo Tango.
