The Greats of Tango series 2020

Carlos Gardel is regarded as the most prominent figure in the history of tango. Born 11 December 1890 in Toulouse, France he became the most famous popular tango singer of all time. Gardel was notable for his baritone voice and the dramatic phrasing of his lyrics. Together with lyricist and long-time collaborator Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel wrote several classic tangos.

At first, Gardel established himself as a singer. Performing at bars and parties and by 1917 released the tango-cancion with his rendition of Mi Noche Triste. This recording would change his trajectory by selling 10,000 copies and becoming a hit throughout Latin America.  This led to a world tour that saw him sell 70,000 records in 3 months while in Paris.

As Gardel’s popularity grew, he entered into acting in films, which became showcases for his wonderful singing talents and movie star appearance.
On June 24 , 1935 Gardel died in an aeroplane crash age 44, at the height of his career, becoming an archetypal tragic hero mourned throughout Latin America. Millions of Gardel’s fans throughout the world went into mourning.  For many, Gardel embodies the soul of the tango style. He is commonly referred to as “Carlitos”, “El Zorzal” (“The Song thrush”), “The King of Tango”, “El Mago” (The Wizard), “El Morocho del Abasto” (The Brunette boy from Abasto), and ironically “El Mudo” (The Mute).
